Event:
Metamorphoses
July 31 - August 16, 2008Based on the myths of Ovid
by Mary Zimmerman
Directed by: Christine Willes
Starring: James Behenna, Lesli Brownlee, Katherine Coupland, Chris Ireland, Vaughn Jones, Michelle Kim, Kiki Lightburn, Evelyn Neufeld, Ian Smith & Robert Tadashi
Metamorphoses includes 10 stories that were written 2000 years ago, updated (Phaeton is a whiny teenager on a therapist’s couch who wants to drive his father’s car) and relevant to today (Erysichthon is a man who is set on the destruction of natural resources). Linked thematically, (“let me not outlive my own capacity to love”), the stories flow from one to the other, transforming and morphing through the pool, which is more than the set—it is a character in the play. Creative and theatrical, Metamorphoses is also a feast for the senses.
Christine Willes, best known for her extensive television credits (Dead Like Me, Reaper) and her work as Artistic Director at The William Davis Centre at VanArts, directs. “I fell in love with the play,” she says. “It is spectacular and utterly unique. I really want Vancouver audiences to experience it with this wonderful cast of young artists who are dedicated to creating an amazing evening in the theatre. By re-telling these ancient Greek and Roman legends of gods and humans, we publicly visit our unconscious where, according to Carl Jung, ‘the old gods rule.’ Working on the play reminds us that love and its shadow—greed—are the invisible forces that drive us all. And that we must forgive ourselves—and each other—when we are at their mercy.”
