There is still time...

…to say you saw them at the beginning….

And that’s what we know audiences of the Chilliwack School of Performing Arts’ current production of Once Upon a Mattress will be saying as they track the very promising careers of the cast. Once Upon A Mattress is based upon the 1835 Fairy Tale The Princess and the Pea by Hans Christian Andersen, and is a fun and exciting treat for audiences of all ages.
The musical originally opened off-Broadway in 1959, starring a very young Carol Burnett as Princess Winnifred. It eventually moved to Broadway where it earned Tony nominations for Best Musical and Best Actress for Burnett. In 1997 it had a full-blown revival on Broadway (with Sarah Jessica Parker as Winnifred) and garnered a Tony nomination for Best Revival of a Musical. Most recently in 2005, it was brought to the big screen and starred Tracey Ullman, Tom Smothers, and Carol Burnett as the old Queen.

Playing Princess Winnifred in this production is Katrina Barson. William Hutchinson plays Prince Dauntless the Drab. Molly Wilson appears as Queen Aggravain, Brandon Mindel as King Sextimus, Caroline Davies as Lady Larken, and Gabriel Kirkley as Sir Harry. Other players in the Queen’s Court are Krista Skwarok (Jester), Anna Canaday (Minstrel), Julian MacPherson (Wizard), and Patrick Finch (Nightingale of Samarkand).

24 other talented singers and dancers (including Cat’s adorable niece Mara Haggquist!) complete the cast and are accompanied by an 8-piece live orchestra. Andrew Smith is the director, Paula DeWitt-Krause the musical director, Shelley Wojcik the choreographer, and Zoe Dennison the costume designer. Kate Whyte, designer of The New Addams Family and The Chris Isaak Show, is once again set designer, and lighting by Jamea Lister.

Once Upon A Mattress runs until Sunday, January 25th, 2009. Evening showtimes are 7:30pm, and there is a matinée Sunday January 25th at 2:00pm. The show happens at the Chilliwack Arts Centre, 45899 Henderson Avenue. Tickets are $13.50 for adults, $10.50 for students/seniors. Tickets can be purchased by calling the Arts Centre box office at 604-792-2069.
