Biz Blog:

Still time to get some Spine!

Okay so we always enjoy when groups of students come in to Biz Books…we enjoy being neighbours of Vancouver Film School and School Creative, with VanArts and VADA close by and SFU gearing up more and more all the time. But yesterday we had students from out of the ‘hood pay us a visit…way out of the ‘hood. Like Alberta.

Some of the University of Alberta BFA Class of 2010 stopped by for a shop while in town working on Governor General’s Award winner Kevin Kerr’s new play SPINE, a REALWHEELS /University of Alberta co-production that was co-commissioned by the Vancouver 2010 Cultural Olympiad and which is co-presented by (our new neighbours) SFU Contemporary Arts. It runs now through March 20th so be sure to check them out!

Nadatodo? Add a dot com and there's no reason to be bored.

While the site refers to her as a “brazen force”, we found Anastasia Koutalianos quite nice when she visited us at Biz Books to tell us about her online events listing site.

So impressed were we with her presentation that we pledged to spread the word to you so that you are able to avail yourselves of her great service and thereby increase the eager audiences for your screenings, readings, performances, recitals and other happening happenings. There is also tons of stuff listed there that you might want to check out as well. Be sure to check out NADATODO.COM and start filling the pages of that shiny new 2010 calendar!

Holiday Flower Fundraiser

Biz Books is pleased to support The Good Company Collective in their fundraising efforts for their 2010 production of Marsha Norman’s award winning play ‘Night Mother. Featuring Biz Books’ own Bronwen Smith in the role of Jessie along with the venerable Wendy Morrow Donaldson in the role of Thelma this anticipated production will take the stage in October 2010 at Studio 16 (1545 West 7th Ave., Vancouver) under the direction of another member of the Biz family, Carol Hodge.

This Pulitzer Prize winning play is an eloquent, enthralling and ultimately shattering story that explores the final hour in the life of a young woman who has decided that life is no longer worth living.

“…honest, uncompromising, lucid, penetrating, well-written, dramatic, and…un-manipulatively moving…” — NY Magazine

Hey Bronwen, John Taylor Went to Tuscany

A few months ago our good friend (and fabulous actor) John Taylor had the opportunity to make a photographic pilgrimage to Tuscany. Bronwen, ever the supportive friend was most surprised when her overtures to John about being “packed in his luggage” and taken along went unheeded. (Well actually, unheeded isn’t quite right for “heed” John indeed did and took every opportunity prior to leaving to make sure Bronwen would be aware of his departure and destination…but I digress….)

Well, the good news is that John is now back and we all have the chance to see him, his photographs, and celebrate his return at his Open Studio Photographic Exhibition which will take place this weekend on Saturday, August 1st and Sunday, August 2nd at his studio, 2146 Yew Street in Vancouver. The show takes place on both days from 1 – 6pm but if you decide to attend on the 2nd, be sure to wish John a Happy Birthday as well! And if you see Bronwen, please let her know that John is back from Tuscany!

Put "Helping to Make a Difference" up AS your calendar

For the past few years Biz Book has been proud to support HOPE IN SHADOWS.

HOPE IN SHADOWS is a unique project based around a photography contest for residents in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. The prize-winning photos are then used to create a calendar that gives a glimpse of the hope, spirit and courage of people living in Canada’s poorest neighbourhood.

Hundreds of Downtown Eastside residents turn out to participate in the contest, the wards ceremony and the gallery exhibition of the photos, making this a vibrant community event.

HOPE IN SHADOWS fosters local arts and culture, gives residents a sense of pride in their community and builds confidnece in participants and photography winners. The exhibition, calendar and high profile media attention promotes understanding of the people who live in this impoverished neighbourhood.

Finally, the selling of the calendar helps hundreds of people both financially and through providing tangible work experience.

Calendars are available at Biz Books or click here to find out more about the HOPE IN SHADOWS project.
