2018 Storyhive Spotlight: Killing for Spark

In this interview, we talked to Michael Sangalang about Killing for Spark.

Can you start by telling us about you and your film?

I’m a 25 year old filmmaker from Vancouver (Port Coquitlam, actually). I studied at BCIT and took the Television Broadcast program, graduating in 2012. Killing for Spark is a black comedy short film about a young couple who find themselves in a rut. Work. Groceries. Laundry. Rinse. Repeat. One day, while fighting during a car ride home, they strike a pedestrian. In an attempt to hide the body and their crime, they find they have re-ignited their passion through bloody murder and can’t stop. Or won’t.

Who else is involved in this project?

We have a great team so far. We’ve got editor Darren Tucker (Dirk Gently), director of photography Brandon Lee (My Imaginary Ex Girlfriend), producer Lisa D’Alessandro (Bordered) and art director Athena Han (Story Unbridled).

What would making this film mean to you?

As a filmmaker, I’ve always done scripted work without much financial aid outside of “hey man, do you still have access to that Arri Skypanel?” and a grant like the Digital Short program would help me carry through my creative vision with the help and influence of Storyhive. Having known many friends who have had the opportunity to create with Storyhive, I’ve been enamored by the process and everything about the Storyhive program. In my journey as a storyteller, it would be my pleasure to create with the aid of Storyhive and continue the tradition of powerful storytelling through the program.
